Broekman’s Temptation

The use of textiles is not a goal on its own, but a medium by which I can best express myself, just as paint is for a painter. Textiles represent the creative power of human beings on a global scale. Textiles are closely connected to everyday life, they are soft, they protect and appeal to the sense of touch. They are timeless and universal. Textile is also the material closest to our skin, day in, day out.’

Broekman’s Temptation
Hotel Arena

Infused with her personal connections, Broekman’s work is also a journey through iconic images from mass media, art history, and countless other sources of inspiration. On display are compositions inspired by Rubens’ paintings, patterns and designs from (sometimes forgotten) global cultures, and handmade, colorful collages, including Diary 1 and Anamorphosis. Unique to this solo exhibition is the series of poignant images from journalism, translated into jacquard-woven works from the series Faith. She openly shares her approach and techniques; Broekman does not let you pass without being seduced by her monumental works.

Barbara Broekman

Barbara Broekman (1955, Amsterdam) transcends the boundaries between autonomous and applied art.

Trained in textile art at the Rietveld Academy and the California College of Arts, Berkeley, she creates monumental works that merge mass media, art history, and cultural imagery with textile techniques. Her hand-crafted approach humanizes themes of love, loss, repression, and conflict, inviting viewers to reflect with compassion.
